Global Leadership Summit

The time has come! For the sixteenth year, we will be hosting the Global Leadership Summit and I’d like to remind everyone how to get ready to receive what God has for you at the Summit!

My experience with seminars are there are two general approaches:

1) Listen for what you already know or are doing.

2) Listen for “next steps”.

Maybe you need validation that you know what you’re doing but mostly, my observation is that those people leave full of pride but don’t improve. Listening for “next steps” can make one feel vulnerable but “the humble path” is the path to blessing, so walk on it!

HOW TO LISTEN FOR NEXT STEPS

1.) Come early. Don’t expect to glide in at starting time and be ready for the day. At least the first day, come 30-45 minutes early, find your seat and set up. Meet people and enjoy some snacks. The second day, you can come a little later (15-20 minutes).

2.) Expect the unexpected. I have found the most powerful talks have come from people I didn’t expect.

3.) Come prepared. How are you going to take notes?

4.) Listen for what catches your attention. Don’t overthink (you don’t have time for that) whether you should write something down or not. If something catches your attention, write it down!

5.) Review for content. At the end of each day, review your notes (best done with someone else) to answer the question, “What did each person say?” Highlight anything you really want to remember.

6.) Plan for action. Make a list of things you could do as a result of what you heard. You don’t just want to get smarter, you want to get better! What did you hear that could make you better and put everything you’d like to do in a “NEXT ACTION LIST”.

7.) Plan to implement. Admit that you can’t do everything, so find your TOP ACTIONS (no more than three until you have done all of them). If you only have one item on that list, the probability of success is very high. And for every item you add, the likelihood of accomplishing anything at all decreases. I don’t want to get all wrapped around the axel at this point, so I look for my “top three actions” and commit to accomplishing them.

8.) Enjoy lunch on campus. We have always provided free lunch so people won’t leave.
