Lead Pastor

I previously served for 5½ years as Associate Minister of the Missouri Valley Christian Church (1984-1989), where I also coached AYSO soccer, freshman boys and girls basketball, and started a Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

I am the Founding and Senior Pastor of Thunder Mountain Church.  My wife Kim and I came in 1989 from Iowa to join with a few families who were looking for a different approach to doing church and reaching this generation for Christ. Eventually, I started coaching softball and teaching algebra in the local public high school, but God used that experience to transform my life and ministry.  He opened the door for me to return to Thunder Mountain, and this time not to grow a church but to grow people and to see salvation not just as something that occurs when we die, but a blessing to live out daily as citizens of the Kingdom of God!

A trial emerged late in 2011 when a growth in my tongue was discovered to be a malignant tumor.  Approximately 40% of my tongue was removed and rebuilt using the tissue from my wrist.  Two other tumors were removed from my neck in the initial surgery and another was discovered after the completion of radiation and chemo requiring a second surgery on July 2, 2012.  Initially, the doctors said that it might take a year to be able to speak clearly again, but I preached on the first Sunday of February 2013 and returned in April to regular preaching duties.

Kim and I were married in 1984. We have two grown and married daughters who serve the Lord with their husbands, and four grandchildren.

I received my bachelor of arts in Pastoral Ministry from Nebraska Christian College and my master of arts from Cincinnati Christian Seminary.

Executive Pastor

Before coming to Thunder Mountain in January 2012, I was a 9th grade Social Studies and English teacher at Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson.  I first got involved in Student Ministry and Worship Arts Ministry back in 2005 in Tucson when I started leading a small group and playing guitar on Wednesday nights.  I held a variety of jobs over the years ranging from frying chicken, making sub sandwiches, scooping ice cream, preparing coffee as a barista, and running an after-school program for 7-year-olds.

Currently, I serve as the Executive Pastor. In this role, I partner with our Next Gen. Ministry Pastor and Connections Pastor to create environments where people can experience the transforming love of God!  I also teach at our weekend gatherings about once a month.

My beautiful wife, Eileen, is a scientist and middle school teacher turned stay-at-home mom with our sons, Sean and Levi, and daughters Grace and Mykah.  We met in a high school history class in 11th grade and were married back in 2008.

I graduated from the University of Arizona in 2009 with my bachelor of arts degree in History for Secondary Education.  I also received my Master of Arts in Ministry Studies from Grace College and Theological Seminary in 2014.

 Fun Facts:

  • I play an assortment of stringed instruments including the guitar, ukulele, and mandolin.
  • I own enough plaid, snap button western shirts to wear for 3 weeks consecutively, without repeating.
